Schlegel-Tieck Prize Shortlist
It was an honour to be shortlisted again for the Society of Authors' Schlegel-Tieck Prize for One Grand Summer by Ewald Arenz (Orenda Books). The Translation Awards ceremony was held at the British Library on 10 February, and the prize was awarded to Jon Cho-Polizzi for a translation of Djinns by Fatma Aydemir (Peirene Press), with runner up Alexandra Roesch for a translation of Boy With a Black Rooster by Stefanie vor Schulte (The Indigo Press). Tasting Sunlight shortlisted for the Schlegel-Tieck Prize
Tasting Sunlight by Ewald Arenz (Orenda Books) was shortlisted for the Society of Authors' Schlegel-Tieck Prize 2023 for translations from German. The prize was awarded to Jamie Bulloch for a translation of Hinterland by Arno Geiger (Picador, Pan Macmillan) at a ceremony at the British Library in February. The judges commented: This shortlist demonstrates a range of voices and style that were a joy to read. Sparse, incisive prose; life-affirming narratives that complicate ideas of womanhood and belonging; the raw evocation of disenfranchisement; playful re-imaginings that experiment with form and technique, hitting hard with the realities of war and colonisation while maintaining the essence of humanity. How did you get into translation and how has your career unfolded? I studied modern languages at UEA and hugely enjoyed the final year translation module. I can still remember the moment when I thought ‘this is what I want to do for a career’. I wanted to stay in Norwich so I applied for the MA in Literary Translation at UEA, which I finished back in 2003.
