Since gaining my MA in 2002, I have been working in Norwich, UK, as a freelance literary translator from German and French to English. I specialise in the translation of children's and young adult literature as well as crime novels, fantasy and other contemporary fiction. Outside fiction I work mainly in the humanities and social sciences. My particular interests include history, especially modern German history and politics.
My rates are reasonable and flexible - pricing will depend on the nature and complexity of the text. As a guide, the Translators' Association recommended minimum rate for literary translation is £87 per 1000 words.
A long but simple text may cost less than a short but complicated one; likewise I may be able to charge a lower fee if there is a longer time-scale for the translation.
I also provide reader's reports for publishers, have frequently reviewed for New Books In German, and can offer proofreading and copyediting services, both for other translators and agencies, and for publishers.
Reports and reviews are generally written for a fixed fee, while proofreading and editing carry an hourly charge. Further information is available on request.
I will be happy to provide a firm quote on the basis of the work to be carried out, whether translation, reader's reports or proof-reading, on confirmation of your requirements.
